A Short Review of Uranium Deposit Model Types – From their Historical Importance, Geological Context, and Case Examples
(exclusive of unconformity-related uranium deposits)

David Thomas, Consulting Geologist

Monday, December 1 - Delta Bessborough Hotel, Salon Batoche Room
8:00 am (sharp!) to 4:30 pm

Overview:

Uranium is not an uncommon element in the Earth’s crust, occurring from a few ppm to several 10s ppm concentration in a wide variety of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks. Uranium can reach significant enrichments, often of economic importance, in a range of geological and tectonic settings including ancient cratons, younger orogenic belts, sedimentary basins, magmatic complexes and surficial environments. A number of empirical- and hybrid genetic/empirical-based geological deposit model classifications have been proposed over the last 50 years to capture the broad range of geological settings that uranium deposits are found, and to assist exploration geologists in developing exploration strategies and tactics. This workshop will introduce several classification approaches that have been proposed for uranium deposits.

The main emphasis of the workshop will follow the current edition of the International Atomic Energy Association’s (IAEA) uranium deposit models classification scheme which recognizes fifteen geological classes. Currently, the IAEA cites a total of 2641 uranium occurrences in their database of which the largest 25 ‘conventional’ deposits represent 10 class types from the classification scheme, thus emphasizing the wide range of geological settings that potential economic uranium deposits can be found. The workshop will describe the main uranium model classes, although excluding the unconformity-related type, which have been and are currently the focus of global exploration activity and exploitation.
